Life, they say, is full of ups and downs. We celebrate the ups and we console ourselves when we’re down. But what about when we’re in the middle? When everything is ‘just okay’. Well, if you ask me, you also need a bit of extra cheer especially during the humdrum of your professional life…

In my humble opinion, rewarding yourself for a job well done is something most of us either overdo, or overlook. Sure, if you have a job, you obviously get paid. Then there’s your annual bonus, holiday pay, special records for outstanding achievements, etc., plus there’s always family and friends to support you. And all of this motivates you to keep working hard and doing your best, right? Of course it does. But from time to time, a smaller but routine reminder that your job is worth doing and that life can still be fun even when you’re tired and bored can work wonders for your mood.

It’s pretty straightforward, really, but like I said, this is something a lot of people overlook, viewing it as wasteful excess. And yes, on the one hand, saving up as much as you can will be useful later on. On the other hand, picking up a couple of cupcakes on your way home every Thursday evening or setting up a monthly ‘free shopping budget’ can really make you feel appreciated—even if these gestures come from yourself.

Or think about it this way: Do you believe that your hard work deserves to be acknowledged? Well, then give yourself a pat on the back every now and then…
