Every day we go to work, because we have to; we eat, because we need to; we commute, because we have to get to work; we sleep, because we need get ready for work the next day. You know what’s often missing from our days? A bit of time, just for me…

I guess that’s one of the major problems hounding modern workers like me. We put up with the things we have to do, and whether we realize it or not, we tend to think of any sort of ‘me time’ as something selfish, unproductive, and even useless. The way I see it, the underlying problem is the illusion that an occasional break—say, a long vacation once a year—will be enough to keep us going. People are like cars, they say; regularly bring them in for service and repairs, maybe the occasional tune-up, and they’ll run trouble-free for years.

I’m not saying that this analogy is wrong, but it doesn’t paint the whole picture. People, in my opinion, are also like cellphones—they need a couple of hours on the charger each day. And it’s not simply about regaining your energy, resting, or indulging in a stress-free moment, it’s also about doing something that you neither need nor have to do, something that you can really enjoy for the fun of it. Most importantly, though, it’s about doing something that’s completely removed from your role as worker, breadwinner, mother, child, friend, colleague, boss, etc. It’s about, for a brief moment each day, just being you.

Of course we all need to be careful not to overdo it, but believe me, an hour or two of ‘me time’ each day will work wonders…
