Well, I’ve been writing about the simple joys of a cup of tea, reading a good book, or cooking, but obviously if there’s one thing I’ve been spending my ‘me time’ on, it’s writing on this blog. And even if it’s only been for just a little over a week, I’ve felt … changed, for lack of a better word.

You know, actually, this is not my first blog. Way back in 2005 I started a blog on Friendster—that was when it was still a social network and before the age of Facebook and Twitter. Then in 2009 (or was that 2010?) I signed up at Blogger, and tried again. That didn’t really take off either; I ended up starting over several times before finally letting it idle. This time around, though, I feel a lot more motivated, so while I started discovering how to shape the blog, the blog also shaped me…

Blogging is clearly a good way to become a better writer—“practice makes perfect” and all that. But it also forces us to think deeper. It’s just all too easy to end up thinking, “Nah, I don’t have anything to say right now.” And then we start putting off entries, and before we know it the blog has withered away. I know, I’ve been there.  But if we consciously attempt to keep blogging, we begin to learn how to track our own lives and articulate what we experience. We also start paying better attention to the meaningful things happening around us—even if they are utterly mundane (such as tea, books, and cooking).

Finally, running a blog also allows us to reach out and meet new people. No matter if we get one reader or a thousand, we get the chance to open up to a world far beyond our daily life. And if you ask me, it’s more than worth the trouble of maintaining a blog of your own…
