If you look at what I have installed on my phone, my laptop, and my desktop PC, you’ll notice something similar. Well, besides the shortcuts for browsers, office programs, antivirus software, media players, e-readers, MP3 players, photo editors… okay, I’ll stop now. What I meant to talk about was games.

Well, I’ve been somewhat of a casual gamer since the late 1980s—there was even a time when I allocated part of my allowance money to buy imported game magazines, only to look at reviews and ads for titles I’d never play. Especially since I never owned a console, and I was never really interested in buying one.

On a side note, I tend to avoid games that were specifically designed to be ‘girly’. Game companies tend to be run by people whose idea of ‘girly’ is throwing in a lot of bright pink and purple while cutting out any real semblance of gameplay…

Now that I’m in my thirties with a fulltime job, I have found myself trapped in a bit of a dilemma. On the one hand, I can now afford to buy games from Steam or on the Google Play store for my phone; on the other, I don’t really have the time to finish an epic 60-hour long adventure on my PC anymore. I guess this is what most gamers my age go through, right?

So now, I mostly spend my money and time on indie titles: small games developed my small companies or independent teams—sometimes even by a single programmer. They don’t usually look great, but there are a lot of charming little games that are truly creative. Definitely not bad for a couple hours of interactive fun after a long day at the office…
