Most of us have just been through a relatively long holiday, right? But it’s not exactly the kind of holiday that allows us to totally relax for several days… So, I’m basically heading back to work while thinking about planning a real vacation—hopefully sometime soon—as well as about how much I have in my savings and how much of that I can set aside. Because the more I think about it, the more I feel I need it…
There are of course the more ‘traditional’ motivations such as the need for a change of pace, a change of scenery, and a chance to really unwind. Besides, staying in a nice hotel means that the only reason to get up early is so that I don’t miss breakfast, and that’s not a bad reason to get out of bed… ^^
But sometimes, I also feel that I want—and need—a real vacation because I want—and need—to feel that doing my job, and putting in long hours is not without its rewards. So, a vacation—even if it’s only for several days once every few years—is perhaps a way to pat myself on the back for a job more or less well done. In other words, working five days a week from nine to five (and usually more than that) feels a lot more compelling when it can pay for transportation, accommodation, and so on somewhere nice, far away from offices and deadlines, where I can relax and have fun.
Sounds self-serving or maybe a bit materialistic? Well, that may be so… but you can only be a model worker for only so many days a year. Sometimes you need a clear reminder that life can be, and is good… ^^
