Vacation is a period of time that should be free of bills (as in regular bills for electricity, water and so on… hotel and restaurant bills are a different matter) and other financial headaches. And of course we also don’t want to worry about bills and so on during our vacation as well as for the first one or two days after we get home. So, before you embark on your next great adventure, remember to:

Pay your bills before you leave; if you’re using automatic payments, confirm that you have sufficient funds in the correct account and that everything will be paid before their due date. Nothing really ruins a holiday like an urgent call from your bank about an overdrawn account or late fees…

Take stock of perishable goods around the house. In other words, eat all the food that might spoil before leaving your home so you don’t have to come home to spoiled beef, wilted vegetables, and moldy bread…

Double-check rates for flights, hotels, car rentals, and anything else you might use during your vacation. Who knows, you might get lucky: some airlines/hotels/etc. will issue credit or allow you to re-book when prices go down…

This is more a safety issue rather than strictly financial, but it’s always a good idea to ask a trusted neighbor, friend, or relative to pick up your mail. Bills, bank statements, and so on might contain personal information that you don’t want to fall into the wrong hands… especially a certain 16-digit number on your credit card bill…
