My last long vacation (gosh, that was a LONG time ago) was also the best vacation I ever had. Not that it was particularly exciting, mind you… on the contrary, it was the exact opposite: totally relaxing and hassle-free. The flight to Bali (yes, my last vacation was also a very typical vacation) was uneventful, the ride to the hotel (in the Tanjung Benoa area) was quick, checking in the hotel went without a hitch, and the rest of the trip was perfectly smooth. The reason? It was the low season…

Yes, it’s one of the most popular tips for a headache-free vacation: go on the low season. Advantage number one is that you don’t have to compete with too many other vacationers for airplane tickets and hotel bookings. This also means that airfare tickets might be lower, while hotels won’t be adding their high-season surcharges (which can start at IDR 300.000).

Advantage number two is that your vacation will come with an extra side of peace and quiet. Sure, places like Bali will never be short of tourists, but when I was there, I wanted to use the hotel’s free shuttle service to Kuta only to learn that I need to book a seat a day ahead. But since there was no one else who wanted to take the ride, I had the shuttle all to myself. Kuta was also a lot less crowded than I imagined…

Of course arranging for a vacation during the low-season isn’t always easy, especially if you have kids or if you have strict furlough policies at work. Still, if you’re planning ahead for your next big vacation, it pays to look into the high and low-seasons of your destination. High season in Bali, for example, is usually from mid-July to mid-September and late December to early January. So you might want to avoid those months. In Bangkok (another popular destination, no?) the low season runs from March to September; but from July to September it’s Jakarta’s high season where plane tickets soar, so your best bet would be to go sometime between March and June.

And for the rest, you can always ask Google… ^^
