So, you’ve finally decided to start a proper exercise program… but what will you be doing? Going to the gym after office hours? Swim a couple of laps in the morning, once or twice a week? Or perhaps join an aerobics class?

Can’t decide? Well, there’s always the option of buying couple of decent running shoes and jog around the block a couple of times a week…

Running is actually quite simple, cost effective, and can be incredibly good for you. Who knows, you might even end up joining a runners club and run marathons for fun… ^^

But again, the basics are quite simple. Still, one thing that separates successful runners from the others is paying careful attention to pacing. A lot of beginners are simply too pumped up on their first run and burn all of their energy within the first five minutes or so, and then give up.

Setting a good pace is actually quite easy. First up, set up an exercise plan where you’ll be running anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes a week. Then, when you go on your very first run, do a slow jog for a minute, then walk for a minute, then jog again, and so on. Next time you go for a run, try to run more and walk less. Before you know it, you’ll be running laps without any serious discomfort.

Then you can start working on long term goals. Your first target might be finishing a 5K run, and afterwards a 10K run with a time limit. Maybe someday you’ll be running a full marathon (42.2K), no? Remember, though, it’s all about the pacing…
