Little Readers…

About a month ago, I went to visit a relative who just had a new baby. While I was waiting in the living room for the new mother and baby to make their debut, I saw my relative’s eldest son, about four, maybe five years old, completely engrossed with a game on his dad’s iPad. He never looked up from the tablet while I chatted with his parents and gushed over his baby sister, and he was still busy when I was saying goodbye. Well, I guess I shouldn’t be all that surprised, no? Tablets are now becoming high-tech pacifiers, and even kindergarteners are now roaming malls with their head bent-down, eyes fixed on their smartphones.

And that’s why I always smile whenever I see a little kid lost in a good book…

It could be something as simple as the sight of a little girl waiting in line at a bookstore’s cashier with a couple of Enid Blyton (The Famous Five, anyone?) books; or perhaps arriving at a family reunion to see a couple of my nieces perched on a sofa, each with a children- or teen-fantasy novel such as the Inheritance series, the Harry Potter books, or perhaps even heavier fare such as The Lord of the Rings

First of all I’m just happy to see that there are kids who have found (perhaps without realizing it) one of the most profound treasures of life (Well, what can I say? I’m a bookworm… ^^) and I’m glad to see that one of my favorite mediums is still appreciated by youngsters (not that I’m old, mind you… ^^)

But most of all, it feels good knowing that not everybody of the virtual generation is allergic to good old paper and ink… ^^
