Itchy Bling…

Well, it seems that just about every fashion category has some sort of health hazard. While some are a bit more obvious, others are relatively unknown. For example, a lot of people aren’t surprised when told that facial piercings carry major health risks… but did you know that your usual piercings can also cause problems?

Now, here’s a fun statistic: between 20 to 25 percent of all piercings are accompanied by complications such as swelling, bleeding, and infection. What’s more, some jewelry pieces contain nickel, and even a tiny amount can trigger a reaction from people with nickel allergy. You don’t have a nickel allergy? Don’t worry; this type of allergy can pop up even in adults, and without warning.

So, if you ever want to add a piercing, remember to get it done at a reputable establishment—one that at the very least maintains a high standard of hygiene. Also, you might want to opt for hypoallergenic accessories.

And finally, reserve those giant, super-heavy earrings for really special occasions. A torn earlobe takes forever to heal…
