As more and more celebrities are seen carrying them, super-sized bags have become a definite fashion trend. And it’s also pretty useful, since with the extra capacity you can take everything you need wherever you go. However, while extra ‘large’ is useful, extra ‘heavy’ can be harmful…

See, when we carry around huge bags, we tend to fill them with as much stuff as it can possibly carry. Unsurprisingly, the extra weight can really hurt your arm, shoulder, and neck. It gets worse as you continue carrying the bag on one side and the strain to your shoulder intensifies. What’s more, your spine has to deal with the imbalanced load and imbalanced pull of muscles from one side of your body. If this continues long enough, spasms of the neck muscles might occur… and these are rather painful.

Want to save yourself a load of pain?

1. Opt for a backpack style purse or bag (that way, the weight of the bag and its contents are more evenly distributed).

2. Backpacks not your style? Well, at least pick a bag with wide straps (same principle: the weigh is distributed over a larger area).

3. Alternate your purse between both shoulders.

4. Try not to carry your heavier bags every day.

Remember: if carrying your bag causes any sort of pain, it means it’s too heavy…
