One of the biggest hurdles of working from home is yourself—or rather the amount of discipline it takes to work from the comfort of your home. But what a lot of would-be freelancers tend to ignore is the smaller, daily annoyances that can make the ‘working’ part really, really tedious…

For example, say you’re working as a freelance translator or something like that which means you’ll be using a computer, and which also means that sooner or later you’ll become an expert in handling minor (or even major) technical problems. And you work at home. Now that’s basically an invitation for friends and family whose laptop is running slow or whose PC won’t start up to conveniently drop by and ask for help... which is a lot harder to do when you’re in an office building. It’s more apparent that you’re working and can’t be disturbed, plus there are usually security personnel.

Even if they don’t have something that needs fixing, people you know will still easily see you as “available for a chat” since you’re at home… which could be nice, but only if it’s once in a while.

It gets even worse when you’re living with your parents or other relatives. Basically, it’s often difficult to remember that people can actually be working at home, and thus not available 24/7 to help around the house with cleaning chores, grocery shopping, and so on.

So, if you’ve ever considered switching from a 9-to-5 job to working from home, remember: It’s the small things that will really, really make it difficult for you…
