For me, nothing really beats a good book when it comes to spending a lazy afternoon on the weekends. Sure, audiobooks are nice and all, but it can’t really replace the feeling of a holding a physical copy in my hands. You know what’s even better? A really old book, with yellowed pages, and a slight musty smell…

That’s why, about once in a month or so, I allocate a weekend to browse through local used-book shops…

And there are plenty of those if you know where to look. In Jakarta, for example, there are at least four major used-book stores (there’s Gudang Buku at Pasar Festival, another one at Plaza Semanggi, at Blok M Square, and in Taman Ismail Marzuki) and countless of smaller shops. Spending your weekend in Bandung? Well, there’s the Palasari book market and the ever-popular Goodreads.

Now, obviously, not everybody would like to have a stack of old, dusty books in their home. But stepping inside a used-book store/market is like walking into a whole different era—a time when smartphones didn’t exist, when TVs weren’t turned on 24/7, and the best entertainment was printed on paper.

Even if you don’t particularly like to read, you might stumble on something from your past: story books you used to read at home, school books from your days in elementary schools, or maybe magazines and comics you used to enjoy as a child.

So, a bit of nostalgia plus the chance to obtain more reading material or collectible books… not bad for a weekend outing, no? ^^
