Fashion trends change every year (and usually more often than that), but we obviously want the contents of our wardrobe—clothes, shoes, accessories, and so on—to survive much longer than that, no? That’s why it always pays to be prepared.

And how do stay prepared?

- Learning basic sewing skills. But no less important than having the appropriate skills is having the appropriate supplies of thread, needles, spare buttons, and so on. It’s surprising to see just how many people will actually throw away an easily-fixable blouse because they simply lack the know-how and equipment to mend it…

- Always have a supply of heavy-duty glue (or even hot glue) for emergency fixes on your shoes or sandals—especially those that you use daily in all kinds of weather.

- Do you have a large collection of accessories and jewelry? Then a set of small pliers and tweezers can be really useful to fix snapped chains and other minor problems. Obviously you should bring your more “serious” jewelry pieces to a “serious” jeweler if repairs are needed, but for your daily accessories, you can have them back in mint condition with just a couple of twists and turns…
