Crocheting...

comment(s)

If you’ve read some of my blog posts this week, you know that I like to dabble in a lot of different hobbies and activities. And I like all of them, really. All that being said, however, my favorite and most productive hobby today is crocheting…

Fashion on the Web…

comment(s)

Do I like fashion? Of course. Now, while I do occasionally buy a copy of Cosmo, InStyle, or Bazaar, I get most of my fashion news and updates from the Web.

comment(s)

I was first attracted to ankle boots because I simply thought they looked cool. Of course it also helped that I encountered plenty of those made from leather or suede, with natural colors and classic designs. But when I finally bought a pair and tried them on, I discovered just how comfy they can get.

Ooooo…. Shiny…

comment(s)

About a couple of weeks ago, one of my aunt-in-laws (is that even a word?) came back after a trip to Nepal (yes, she’s the mountaineering type). Naturally, she didn’t come empty-handed, and brought a handful of souvenirs. My share was a beautiful, silver bangle.

'MAXI'mum Black…

comment(s)

When it comes to clothes, I love everything that’s long and flowing. So, naturally, I’ve been thinking about buying a maxi skirt for some time—a black maxi skirt, if I could find one, since it would be easy to either dress it up or down. Luckily, I found one that’s just about perfect for me.

My precious…

comment(s)

In my last post, I mentioned how I love long, flowing clothing, right? So, I was pretty excited when the so-called ‘kimono cardigans’ started showing up, since not only were these extra-long and flowing, they also had these beautiful wide sleeves. Most of the kimono cardigans I found on sale, however, were made using printed fabric—not exactly my style. But then I saw several crocheted kimono cardigans on the Web, and thought to myself, ‘Why don’t I just make one myself?’

Oversized Tops…

comment(s)

Back in the ‘90s and early 2000’s, fashion trends for girls my age tended to revolve around body-hugging shirts. This was not an exactly happy time for those with a bit of extra curves; like me, for example. Tight clothes tended to make me look a bit extra chubby, and whenever I needed to sit, squat, or bend down, I had to be extra careful as the shirt would then get pulled upwards. Thankfully, that era was finally replaced by the age of oversized tops…

12 Jun 2013

Skinny Jeans…

comment(s)

I never actually thought I would ever like skinny jeans. This was especially true when tight-fitting tops were still in vogue. Me in tight tops and bottoms… well, can you say ‘beached manatee’? However, skinny jeans and oversized tops make quite a decent couple, and since the latter is now pretty much the norm (as well as being one of my favorites) the former has become a definite part of my wardrobe…

Layer, upon layer…

comment(s)

Hope you’re not bored hearing me rambling about oversized tops and cardigans yet. This will be the last one, I promise… ;)
Anyway, since fashion trends have moved away from tight-fitting to flowing, I’ve also started learning how to layer my clothes. Well, since basically I’ve already found my favorite style for now, I’m simply picking out the right tank-tops to go with—under—my cardigans.

Jumpers…

comment(s)

Well, it seems that this year we’ll be skipping the whole ‘dry season’ thingy. But while my umbrella will be getting a lot more mileage this year, at least so will my beloved jumper (aka sweater) collection… :)

comment(s)

Vintage-styled summer dresses and boho-chic skirts; not exactly common amidst today’s Korean fashion wave, no? But it actually feels quite nice looking different, especially if looking different also feels comfortable…

Yup, bear ears…

comment(s)

This, ladies, is my favorite poncho. It’s white. It’s soft. It’s fluffy. And yes, it has a couple of cute bear ears. When I first saw this one on sale, I knew right then and there that I had to have it… no matter how out-of-character it was for me to go for something this cutesy…

comment(s)

This is another one of my DIY projects that somehow turned out better than expected. My original plan was to make a tote bag, but somewhere in the middle of it, the project veered into clutch bag territory. Turns out it was for the best… :)

comment(s)

The last time I went clothes-hunting, I ended up taking with me a couple of items that were totally out of character for me. Why? Well… I thought, why not?

comment(s)

In my last post, I wrote that the vest top I described was “[one] of the items” I bought on my most recent clothes-hunting trip. Also, I wrote how it not the type I would usually pick. Well, item number two is also something I don’t usually wear: a grey t-shirt with a large print of an owl…

comment(s)

Seen at a glance, these aren’t much different from your average flat shoes. Except, perhaps, for the 2 cm heels—which is why I like this pair so much, especially when I have to walk across an uneven parking lot or any other rocky surfaces.

Going on vacation means that you can kick back, relax, and let go of all of your daily worries… well, except for looking good, of course. On the one hand, having to think about what to wear each day while on vacation is no fun, but there are a lot of easy ways to stay stylish without having to drag your entire wardrobe. Oh, and a lot of this go hand-in-hand with what we discussed on packing…

Bad hair days…

Keeping up with the latest fashion is not exactly easy. Trends change more often than the weather, and haute couture isn’t exactly cheap. But the burdens of high fashion doesn’t fall only on your wallet (or bank account… plenty of items cost more than what can conveniently be carried around in cash) but can also be detrimental to your health.

There are plenty of examples of how trendy can equal torture, and we’ll take a look at some of the more common ones in later posts. But why don’t we start from the very top: our hair.

28 Oct 2013

Killer Heels…

If you’ve ever attended a party in high heels knows that these shoes can be excruciating to wear. But, hey, no pain no gain, right ladies? Problem is, ‘pain’ is your body trying to tell you that something’s wrong, and that you might need to do something about it…

30 Oct 2013

Dicey Footwear…

High-heels are the poster child of ‘painful fashion’, what with the possible damage to your toes that they may cause. However, the side effects of wearing high-heel shoes usually show up in the long term. If you want spectacular short-term damage, you need to look at a whole different range of footwear…

Want to instantly create a different and edgy look? Just get a facial piercing… or two, or more. Sure, not everybody you know might approve, but a piercing on your lip, nose, or eyebrow is just another harmless fashion statement, right? Yeah, about that…

30 Oct 2013

Itchy Bling…

Well, it seems that just about every fashion category has some sort of health hazard. While some are a bit more obvious, others are relatively unknown. For example, a lot of people aren’t surprised when told that facial piercings carry major health risks… but did you know that your usual piercings can also cause problems?

30 Oct 2013

Skinny and Risky…

I like skinny jeans. So, looking into the health risks of this type of pants isn’t exactly fun for me. But in the name of fairness, let’s take a peek at the horrors in store for skinny-jeans-wearers like me. Or maybe just the single, most severe side effect: serious nerve damage.

Eyeliners: a definite must for the perfect look, no? Well, there’s a reason that this particular makeup has been around for centuries. (Millennia, actually… they say there are records of ancient Egyptians using eyeliner as early as 10.000 BC.) Still, you might want to be a bit careful with this one…

As more and more celebrities are seen carrying them, super-sized bags have become a definite fashion trend. And it’s also pretty useful, since with the extra capacity you can take everything you need wherever you go. However, while extra ‘large’ is useful, extra ‘heavy’ can be harmful…

01 Nov 2013

Lipstick…

Sometimes even the most mundane fashion item can carry slight but noticeable health risks. For example: lipstick. Did you know that the average woman will eat between two to four kilos of lipstick in her lifetime? And that most lipsticks contain toxic metals? Well, now you know…

What’s in a bag?

It’s not the size of a bag that you should worry about, but how much you put in it. No less important, however, is what the manufacturer put into the handbag you’re now carrying around with you. Yes, your very handbag may be conspiring to ruin your health… ^^

Have you ever had somebody tell you that bras can be bad for you? Well, there’s more than just a bit of truth in that. Especially, that is, if you’re wearing one that’s too tight for you… and up to 70 percent of women are believed to wear the wrong bra size.

It’s not just women who are vulnerable to the potential health hazards of fashion… men sometimes face the same dangers. Worse, one of the most damaging male fashion item is something that a lot of men have to wear regularly: neckties.

comment(s)

Most men don’t really understand female fashion. What’s more, there are certain styles and trend that most men actually find appalling… and these certain styles and trends have found a boost in popularity precisely because they can supposedly repel guys.

The birthstone for the third month is the gentle aquamarine… which I often confuse with turquoise since the color of aquamarines is usually described as turquoise. So, apologies in advance if you see me mixing them up elsewhere (such as on Facebook or Twitter).

Anyway, let’s take a closer look at the stone of the month, shall we?

Branded vs. Unique…

comment(s)

I’m not exactly a shopaholic, but I do like to shop once in a while. Well, okay: more than just once in a while. Of course, when it comes to shopping—regardless of how often you go out—there are tons of decisions to make: Where will you shop? Online or in a brick-and-mortar store? How much will you spend? Will you look for branded or non-branded apparel?

Now, wait a minute… this last one sounds a bit more interesting, no? Let’s take a closer look…

comment(s)

Well, that’s a good question, right? “Can one bag ever be enough?” Especially since bags aren’t simply things to hold your stuff… they’re also fashion accessories that can make or break a look. So, again, the question is: Is one bag for all occasions possible, or do you really need one bag for each outfit?

A Touch of Fire…

Last week we had a closer look at Miss Mondial’s MEC collection. Today, it’s FireMark’s turn. Here’s the official description:

“Mondial FireMark Princess is the world's most perfectly cut princess diamond. The design and precise cut maximize the optical light performances of fire, brilliance and scintillation.”

Having trouble making out the technical descriptions? No worries… that’s exactly what we’re going to break down today.

comment(s)

Sunglasses can instantly add a touch of glamor, while at the same time it protects your eyes from the sun’s intense glare. Driving around in the middle of the day, for instance, is much easier (and much cooler) with a pair of shades…

So, how do you pick sunglasses that would suit you best? Easy…

comment(s)

Ever heard the phrase ‘with beauty comes pain’? This is perhaps especially true when it comes to shoes... Unlike, say, loafers or sneakers, shoes that are made to look nice are usually a bit hard on your feet. On the bright side, more and more shoe manufacturers are now focusing on comfort, ergonomic designs, as well as style…

A quick trip to the gym or a lazy day spent at home is no reason to stop looking fabulous, no? And one easy way to add a touch of style to even your most casual look is to pick up a nice graphic t-shirt. Well, there are of course a couple of things you can do to make the graphic tee look work for you other than simply picking one with a cool picture and a witty line…

Office fashion usually boils down to various bright hues and pastel tones… well, unless your workplace has a strict dress code or if you’re wearing a uniform. Now, on the one hand, multicolored business attire can really help you stand out; on the other, the classic black-and-white look can be just as powerful…

The Art of Shopping

comment(s)

Looking great at a wedding is not the exclusive right of the bride… when you come as a guest, you too should look your best, no? So, let’s take a look at the essentials for the perfect wedding-guest look…

Shopping and travel have always been the best of friends. But of course, some places offer better shopping experiences than others. So, I thought we’d take a quick look at some of the best travel destinations the world has to offer to genuine shopaholics…

Banners and posters with “SALE” printed on them with large, colorful letters is a surefire way to trigger our “hunting” instincts, no?  Of course, we also don’t want to go overboard and end up with a ton of stuff we don’t need… so, it pays to be prepared. How do you do that? Well…

comment(s)

Yes, generalizing a whole gender is not nice… but the simple fact is that a lot of men are inept when it comes to shopping—especially fashion shopping. On average, a man will spend 26% more than what they should be paying and most men wear clothes that are too big. So, what they need is basically a shopping guide or coach… and what does a shopping guide/coach teach? Well, mostly that men need to learn to:

New season—new fashion... right, ladies? Well, obviously we don’t have a “spring” per se; what we have is more of a sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy period that’s mostly uncertain. But that’s no reason not to dress for the season, no? And below, you’ll find some nice, easy-to-follow tips taken from spring collections all over the world...

Hopefully you’re not sick of “spring this” and “spring that” yet… because, hey, spring is the season of new things, of creating new things. And even here, where we only have the dry and rainy seasons, we can still tap into that spirit of creation and reinvention to create ‘a new you’. Who knows… you might like what you find… ;)

But, uh, what kind of new paths should we look at?

comment(s)

Floral patterns for spring… or in our case, when foreign fashion brands are rolling out their spring collections; you get the drift, right? Anyway, floral patterns for spring are pretty much expected—a bit of a cliché, even. But here’s the thing: floral works and it still works today. Why? One reason may be that there are plenty of unique and exciting styles that fall under the ‘floral’ category. So, let’s take a quick look at some of the more popular styles and see which one fits you best…

comment(s)

Layering—one of the best ways to create a really unique look, but often avoided because a) a lot of people think it’s too hard to get right, and b) a lot of people are afraid that layering their clothes will make them look bigger. As logical as that last bit might sound, a perfectly layered look will actually complement your figure and create a more proportional silhouette. What’s more, achieving that ‘perfectly layered look’ isn’t that hard and can be done in five easy steps…

The White Shirt

comment(s)

When it comes to clothing, I guess there’s nothing as simple, egalitarian, and timeless piece like the simple white shirt. Mostly worn by fresh graduates on their first jobs (or new students during hazing), simple, all-white shirts aren’t exactly the height of fashion... and most move on to more flattering clothes as soon as possible.

Ah, but on the contrary, many true fashion aficionados feel that the white shirt is one of those rare items that can be both classic yet trendy...

comment(s)

There are outfits you pick because you want to appear professional and smart (e.g., your work attire... or something you’d wear for a job interview). There are also outfits to look nice (e.g., when you’re going out for the weekend with your friends). Now, I bet most people will have these two styles down pat, right?

But what will you wear when you’re going somewhere that doesn’t mandate formal dress but isn’t exactly fun, either? Say, when you’re going to the bank, or going to a service center to have your phone checked. More often than not, you’ll simply go in whatever you’re currently wearing, right? Or something really simple... Ah, but it seems that fashion is invading even this humble part of our daily routine...

comment(s)

The corporate look rarely strays away from shirt and tie, a stiff blazer or suit jacket, and a black skirt or pants. Now, imagine if you have plans to, say, meet up with friends after work, your formal work attire might look a bit out of place, no?

But don’t worry: slipping in some cool touches and pieces into your work wardrobe isn’t that hard. And below, we have some of the best, most-proven tips...

Sneakers are extremely comfortable, especially for those times when you’re going to be on your feet and on the move. Well, that’s what they’re designed for. But on the other hand, sneakers aren’t exactly what most people would consider stylish—except if you’re going to the gym, running a marathon, or if you’re a teenager.

So, how do you go about incorporating a pair of comfy sneakers into something that looks a little bit more classy and mature?

comment(s)

Some women collect bags, some simply buy bags as necessary... still, whichever path you take, we all know that (a) you can’t live with just one bag, and (b) picking bags in almost an art form in itself. So, let’s take a look at the very basics: the types of bags that each woman should have in her personal collection...

1. A classic black day bag (which can hold all you need in a typical day). Why black? Well, black bags never really run out of style, no?

2. A tote-bag in a neutral tone that can easily go with just about any outfit (for those times when you don’t have time to be picky).

Culottes!

comment(s)

Culottes were originally men’s wear. No, seriously. Female culottes came later on and were known as ‘divided skirts’, where the two-legged design was hidden by ruffles, folds, and other embellishments. Naturally, this allowed women to be much more active (riding bikes, for example, became quite a bit easier)... and back in the 1930’s, society (or at least the press) hated it. So, also naturally, culottes became an icon of feminism.

Regardless of its history, though, culottes have grown into a staple of high fashion, especially amongst the spring and summer collection of famous design houses (think Armani, Mulbery, and the like).

Anyway, let’s get to the most important part: how do you go about creating the perfect look centered on a pair of fancy culottes. Here are some of the best pieces of expert advice floating around the fashion scene... ;)

Pastels!

comment(s)

Soft lemon, mint, mauve, and baby blue... the colors of spring and summer. Yes, these hues (incidentally the colors of ice cream as well) are popular once more as the weather turns hot. Pastel touches are everywhere, from ultra-feminine dresses to modern sportswear (and even menswear—which is not exactly new, having been popularized since the ‘80s through TV shows like Miami Vice).

Anyway, like any other bright color pallet, you might want to pay some extra attention on how you incorporate pastels into your wardrobe. Below are some basic tips to get you going...

Tees with a Story

comment(s)

Once in a while, you don’t just want to wear something that’s just impressive, but also a bit expressive, no? Now, some people like to express themselves through distinct styles, some through color, and some through... text.

Yes, we’re talking about T-shirts (or sweaters) with slogans, quotes, even just one or two words. Sounds a bit tacky? Not when you know how to pick something really chic...

Stunning in Silver

comment(s)

Metallic color trends have come and gone, and now, shiny hues are back in. Then the trend split further. At first it was classic yellow gold, which was then followed by its softer-shaded cousin: rose gold. And now? Well, now we have silver... I wonder if we’ll see a lot of copper themes in the next couple of months... :)

Anyway, silver is back. But it’s not always easy to incorporate this color into your daily wardrobe. Luckily, there’s plenty of expert advice we can rely on...

comment(s)

The title of this post is a quote from none other than Yves Saint Laurent... and it is oh so true. Sure, there are a lot fashion trends that’s fun to follow for a while, and sometimes you’ll find something that will be regular part of your wardrobe.

However, there are some fashion items that are practically timeless. Maybe not exactly the things you particularly like, but things that are always useful and are part of just about any serious wardrobe. Find the essentials below...

comment(s)

Did you know that before the 20th century, shirts were considered underwear? That’s why in formal occasions, we still have to wear a suit jacket or blazer over shirts. (What’s more, a shirt peeking from beneath said jacket/blazer was considered sexy... a bit like a visible bra strap.)

Of course today, shirts are an essential part of fashion—a classic garment that’s fresh, sharp, and looks smart... if you know how to properly wear them, that is... :)

comment(s)

What is the ultimate goal in fashion? Clothing that will make you look younger? Or ones that will make you look toned and fit as if you go jogging every morning? Now, both of these are of course really nice, but no, an even more satisfying fashion accomplishment is the one that will enable you, when complimented about your marvelous dress, to reveal the surprisingly humble origins of your latest fashion find...

In other words: clothes that look more expensive than they are... How is this an accomplishment? Well, it means that you have a good eye for clothing that hides a bit more value than what its price label may indicate. And that’s quite admirable, no?

Teacher’s Fashion

comment(s)

Fashion tips and inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere... and sometimes even from those dabbling in professions we think would be far removed from fashionable clothing. Case in point: teachers. Well, teachers and school staff who have to wear uniforms are of course out of the equation. But even with a strict dress code, it’s not all that hard to look elegant and classy.

And who knows? Some of these might work for our own daily and/or professional getups...

How can anybody talk about female fashion without mentioning handbags? It’s the one thing that a lot of women are most attached to—it’s something that’s very personal (do you let anybody but your closest friends and relatives go through yours?), it’s also very practical (especially in this age of gadgets), and it can also make or break any getup.

Some might consider it anti-feminist to talk about the female obsession with handbags nowadays... but still; it’s perhaps part of the female identity, no? And there really isn’t a male equivalent for the modern handbag. What’s more, this particular fashion item we all know and love has quite a fascinating history...

Rocking your Spots...

comment(s)

For quite a few people, patterns like leopard spots and tiger stripes—especially on tight dresses and leggings—come off as tacky. Still, the popularity animal print has never really waned. See, for a lot of people, animal print means standing out, about being bold, and about—shall we say—showing our more animalistic side.

Quick fun fact: That ‘animalistic’ part is no joke—there’s a British zoo that has visitors who come in wearing animal print clothing cover up, because it confuses some of the animals. Seriously, click here for the full story.

Anyway, if worn correctly, there’s no reason that animal print can’t work for you. Read on, ladies...

Artsy Fashion...

comment(s)

Fashion and art are naturally quite close, with fashion designers often looking to the works of artists for inspiration. Some would even argue that fashion is an art form in itself. And true enough, the higher we look, the closer fashion and pure art seems to be.

Of course, most of the really abstract art-house fashion we see on the catwalk would feature apparel that no sane person would wear outside a fashion show. But that doesn’t mean that art-fashion is not something we can see—or even wear—in our day-to-day activities...

Ruffles and Rimples

comment(s)

Ruffles... some think it’s an addition that makes an outfit appear dainty and playful, some think it should only be used for the outfits of little children, and some think it’s a waste of fabric. Regardless of in which group you belong, there’s no denying that clothing with ruffles is still a common sight at fashion shows and red-carpet events.

So, can it also work for us normal people? Read on, ladies... :)

An Intro to Spezzato

comment(s)

Spezzato”... ever heard about this one? Well, it’s an Italian word, and a very, very Italian concept as well. Basically, spezzato is an art of matching a jacket and a pair of trousers. The twist is that both aren’t part of a suit. So, if you see a gentleman wearing a smart wool blazer, a nice pair of trousers, as well as, say, expensive sunglasses... that’s spezzato. Oh, and yes, it’s a men’s fashion thing...

However, that doesn’t mean that women can’t adopt this particular style. And who knows, you might have already done so without realizing it... :)

Polka Dots!

comment(s)

The polka is a name of a dance, as well as the accompanying music, from Central Europe... and you can probably say that it looks and sounds outdated. But these two traditions never really disappeared, and in fact sometimes their popularity bounces back. And the same thing can also be said about the pattern that takes its name from the dance. Yes, we’re talking about polka dots... and yes, polka dots are back in the fashion scene of 2014.

A Touch of Paisley…

comment(s)

Ah, paisley… Now, this is a motif with quite a history behind it. Supposedly, this pattern of twisted teardrops that come in limitless variations originated ancient Persia, while others say India. But the name came from the town of Paisley, in Scotland... and yes, this pattern is also part of Celtic and Welsh culture.

Break the Rules!

So, with that in mind, let’s look at some of the first fashion rules we should break first... ;)
