Culottes were originally men’s wear. No, seriously. Female culottes came later on and were known as ‘divided skirts’, where the two-legged design was hidden by ruffles, folds, and other embellishments. Naturally, this allowed women to be much more active (riding bikes, for example, became quite a bit easier)... and back in the 1930’s, society (or at least the press) hated it. So, also naturally, culottes became an icon of feminism.
Regardless of its history, though, culottes have grown into a staple of high fashion, especially amongst the spring and summer collection of famous design houses (think Armani, Mulbery, and the like).
